Hi there, and welcome to my homepage. When last I updated this website, it was the summer of 2009 and I was in the throws of getting ready for a production of THE LAST SMOKER IN AMERICA (Book & Lyrics by Bill Russell) at New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). Nearly a year has passed since then. NYMF has come and gone, and the SMOKER team is now preparing for a pre-New York run in Columbus, OH, in the fall, produced by CATCO and Andy Sandberg. I am also at the early stages of work on a musical based on Pete Hamill's novel SNOW IN AUGUST, collaborating with lyricist Mindi Dickstein (LITTLE WOMEN) and librettist Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (the upcoming on AMERICAN PSYCHO, and author of non-musical plays King of Shadows and Good Boys and True).
It’s also been a very challenging year for me. My father died last October, while I was in New York with SMOKER. Adding to this enormous sadness, in February the son of one of my closest friends was killed by a drunk driver while walking back to Brown University. Like many other people, I was deeply affected by his death and his family’s tragic loss, and can't begin to make sense of any of it. As Paul Simon wrote, "Sometimes even music cannot substitute for tears." All things considered, a good year, not a great year…
Thank God for musical theater!
